❄️The Winter Wonderland Book Tag❄️

Good morning, all!😊
Happy Monday. I cannot believe that the month of May is close to ending. Crazy, how time flies! How was your weekend? What is your week looking like? My week is starting to look pretty busy. This Thursday is the first day that we can submit our primary medical school apps. I can’t believe that it is already almost time to submit them. I am really nervous but I am also very excited!

Today’s post is the Winter Wonderland Book Tag, a post created by Tracy @Truffle’s Literary Wonders. I was tagged by the wonderful V @TheSassyLibrary Fox! Thank you Tracy for creating such a fun post and thank you to V for tagging me to partake in the awesomeness. Be sure to check out both of their blogs as they have content that you do not want to miss! Here is V’s Winter Wonderland Book Tag post!

One: What book is so happy and so sweet that it just warms your heart?

The Hourglass Door (Hourglass Door, #1)

I love this series and I love Abby and Dante together😍

Two: What’s your favourite book with a white cover?

Hush, Hush (Hush, Hush, #1)

Okay okay. I know it is not a white cover, but gray still goes with the theme of winter wonderland 😂 Right? I realized, through this book tag, that I have not really read very many books with white covers!!

Three: You’re sitting in a nice, comfortable chair with a cup of hot chocolate. What monster book are you reading?

The Beast of Noor

Four: It’s snowing outside and you decide you want to have a snowball fight. What fictional character do you want to have this snowball fight with?

One (or all) of the bat boys from SJM’s ACOTAR series!

Five: Sadly, your campfire is dying. What last few chapters of a book would you throw in the fire to revive it and keep yourself warm?

The Stand

Omgsh burning a book!!! Okay, okay, if I had to survive… I throw in The Stand… the entire book 😂 I don’t think I would miss that book very much. Plus, it is a huge book so it will keep the fire going for a while 😂

Six: What book do you love so much that you would buy another copy of it to give to someone as a Christmas gift (or any gift really) to inspire them to start reading?

From Blood and Ash (Blood and Ash, #1)

From Blood and Ash by Jennifer Armentrout… or anything by her!

Seven: Who do you tag?

Leslie @BooksAreTheNewBlack

Dini @DiniPandaReads

Annemieke @ADanceWithBooks

I also tag anyone who is interested in doing this post! 😊

I hope you all have a great Monday. I will check back in with you guys tomorrow for Top Ten Tuesday.

📺💭TV Review: Shadow and Bone on Netflix

Hello, everyone!
Happy Monday evening. How was your day today? I hope it went well and it wasn’t chaotic as I know Mondays tend to be. If it was chaotic, then know that the day is coming to a close and you made it through. I am proud of you!! And you should be proud of yourself too.

Today, I will be discussing my thoughts on the Shadow and Bone Netflix series. I buddy watched the show with Leslie @BooksAreTheNewBlack. My sister even got in on the action and watched it with me. We all finished the show earlier this week but since we finished, I may have re-watched the show yesterday and today 😂 My sister and I might just be a little bit obsessed with it. 😂

I want to caution anyone who has not yet watched/finished the show as there may be spoilers in this review!

My Thoughts on the Shadow and Bone Netflix show:

Overall, I thought that the show was wonderfully done. The acting was fantastic. Ben Barnes is 😍. Jessie is an outstanding actress… Archie as Mal was 👌🏼 (Netflix Mal >>> book Mal) and the Crows were amazingggg. Freddy = awesomeness. Amita was exactly how I imagined Inej. Jesper was freaking hilarious and provided lots of comedic relief when things were pretty intense! Oh, and Nina and Matthias… I loved them!

It was interesting to see how the writers wove the dregs/the crows into the Shadow and Bone plot. I really liked how the story switched from Alina to the Crows to Nina and Matthias. It really reflected the structure of the books with how the books switched POVs/time periods. I never found myself confused, either, so I thought that they did a great job!

Things I Loved

The Darkling: Okay. So let’s talk about how great Ben Barnes is as the Darkling. Ben did an amazing job with his portrayal of the Darkling. I loved how Ben is soft spoken yet he radiated power and authority. He was the perfect Darkling! I thought it was interesting that they gave the Darkling more of a backstory… They made his character more morally gray than just being a power hungry eternal dude. Since I have not yet read the other books, I was not sure if what was in the TV show was the same as the books or if it was even in the books and Leigh and the other writers just fleshed out his motivations a bit more for the purposes of the show.

—I was literally screaming when the Darkling and Kaz came face to face. Who do you think would win a fight between the Darkling and Kaz? My money would be on Kaz! While the Darkling has his Grisha powers, Kaz has his unique genius… and, knowing Kaz, he would have already anticipated the Darkling’s play!

Mal: I thought Mal was okay in the book but Netflix show Mal had my heart melting. I know a lot of people were tired of seeing the same meadow scene over and over, but I think that it was important for that to be in the show in order for the viewer to really get the feeling of the connection between Alina and Mal.

Nina and Matthias = perfection. Loved it!
-I loved Matthias’ accent. I couldn’t believe my ears when I heard Cal talk without an accent!

Leigh’s cameo: I was totally screaming when I saw Leigh in her purple kefta! What a huge moment for her and then for fans to see her on screen as a character in the books she created! It was wonderful (not so wonderful for my sister’s ears because like I said… I was legitimately screaming with delight).

Jesper: loved Jesper! He is just as lovable as book Jesper. Loved Inej! That moment when she sees Sankta Alina summon the sun was so beautiful!

Sound effects: I thought it was really cool that they added in a sound effect for when the Grisha use their powers. From an outsider’s perspective, such as my sister, it was really helpful to know when they are using their powers!

Show structure: I loved how it flipped back and forth to the past and present, to the Crows and Alina. It really reminded me of the structure of the book and, as it did in the book, it really gives an extra punch to the feels.

Random side note: I totally fan girled whenI saw that The Lives of Saints was actually in the movie. I am also pretty sure that the book that David threw at Jesper was a copy of Shadow and Bone! 😂 I love when little things like that are throughout the show. It really demonstrates that the creators of the show cared about the books and doing right by the reader.

Kaz: I found myself a little disappointed with the writing with Kaz. I thought that Freddy did an amazing job portraying Kaz BUT I think that the writing was what was disappointing. I felt that you really could not see his genius behind his plans and honestly felt that the side character Arken was doing the plotting and not Kaz. So in that way the show fell short on that front for me. However, I will say that I appreciated the “lynx flush” twist. I just wish there had been a bit more of Kaz’s classic, witty lines from the books but I also realize that much of the material was “prequel,” and thus the Six of Crows lines might be mostly saved for the next season?

Things that could have been improved

I wish Inej did more scaling. Sometimes, I feel like TV shows try to convey impressive skillsets by having characters do things like jumping down from impressive heights but Inej’s talents are rooted in her discreteness and her ability to find a way when no other could. In other words, her methods are not the “in your face” type. I felt like her jumping down in front of Kaz was just “typical” and and a too obvious effort to make her talents impressive.

Kaz’s Crow Club Fight Scene: Can we talk about how in episode 2, Kaz is taken down in, like, two seconds by Pekka’s men? That is literally so unrealistic. Your girl may have shouted at the TV at that 😂 But seriously.

Alina’s fighting skills: I thought that there was a lack of development between Botkin and Alina and even with Baghra and Alina… I thought that, since it is a TV show, there would be more development in that area but they ran through that pretty quickly – much like a movie would have (okay, the scenes would have been a bit shorter still but my point still stands).

Show length: the episodes were about 45-50 minutes long, which I thought was a great length. There were only 8 episodes though, which I found to be very disappointing. I think that the series could have been stretched by at least one more episode… if they had included a bit more of the Crows in there and more of that training development with Alina.

Overall
I absolutely loved the show overall! I think that the episodes got better and better as they went on. I think the acting was fantastic, the creators of the show did right by the reader, etc. My sister and I may be a bit obsessed with the show as we have re-watched all the episodes 😂 We have also rewatched episodes 4 a few times over and over. If you are so curious as to why we watched episode 4 over and over.. it is because my sister is obsessed with the part where the Darkling says, “please, call me Aleksander.” She basically swoons every time. 😂

I hope you all enjoyed reading my thoughts on the new Netflix TV show, Shadow and Bone. What did you think of the TV show? Did you have a favorite episode? Let me know in the comments below.

I would also like to thank Leslie @BooksAreTheNewBlack for buddy watching this series with me. It was so much fun to fan girl and discuss the show with you!❤️

🌴Monday Post: Back from a Mini Break!

Hello, everyone!😊
How are you all? I realize it has been about a week since I last posted. 😬 I sort of disappeared without really any notice. Sorry about that! I felt that I just needed to take a bit of a 🌴break🌴 (I really could use a vacation 😂) from something and that just happened to be blogging. I was getting a bit overwhelmed with all that I was having to do each day and I felt that blogging was just becoming a habit rather than something I actually enjoy. I also have been so busy with my two jobs and just been dealing with… life and I just felt that I needed a break. So I took a break to catch up on things that I have been falling behind on. Like self-care, grocery shopping, and spending time with my sister to name a few. Anyway, I am back now… refreshed and ready to move forward! I might not post as much each week, but I am going to make an effort to continue posting. I do not want to stop blogging because I love it, but I also think that I am going to not hold myself to a rigorous schedule so that I can ensure that I keep loving it. If that makes sense 😂

Anyway, this post is really just an update on what I have been up to — reading or otherwise! It hasn’t been much, to be honest, since I have been really busy with work 😂

🧐Flashback Friday: Old novels with my favorite bookish tropes

Happy Friday, everyone!! TGIF. Seriously.
I feel like a broken record, but… I gotta say that this work was really crazy this week. Like, exceptionally crazy. I guess it makes the time pass by faster but it was pretty stressful. Definitely looking forward to a relaxing weekend. What are your plans for this weekend? More importantly, what are your plans for YOU this weekend?

Flashback Friday is a weekly meme hosted here at HerBookishDesires that highlights oldie (but goodie) novels. Each week, there is a new topic. You can find the list of topics, as well as the information page for FBF here. Today’s topic is old novels with my favorite bookish tropes.

Let me start off my saying that my favorite bookish trope is enemies to lovers, which is what I have chosen to focus on today. I am thinking of having future FBF topics about specific tropes, but we will see! Apologies in advance for the lack of pictures. It is pretty late at night as I draft this and I need to go to bed 😂 If I get the chance, I will update the post with pictures of the covers.

Old novels with my favorite bookish trope: enemies to lovers

Hush, Hush by Becca Fitzpatrick
Need by Carrie Jones
Cruel Beauty by Rosamund Hodge
Trylle by Amanda Hocking
Abandon by Meg Cabot

🦊Sassy Saturday: February Edition

Good afternoon and happy Saturday everyone!
I had half a work day today and I keep feeling like it is a Monday 😂 I don’t usually work Saturdays… it just happens every once in a while that I get scheduled for a Saturday shift. Which is fine because I don’t mind working at all! I just keep thinking that the weekend is over 😂 I am happy to be very wrong! However, I am really glad today is a half day because the weather outside is gorgeous. It sunny–and dare I say, warm–and the sky is a beautiful crips, clear blue. 😍

🦊Sassy Saturday a monthly meme hosted by V @TheSassyLibraryFox where we answer the 5 “SASSY” questions. “This meme was created to get to know other bloggers, their new obsessions and to reflect on your own last month!” – V. Here is the link for the Sassy Saturday info page.

S – Series you loved this month
Bookish: series: ACOTAR 😂 (also the main series that I read this month)
Non-bookish: Ocean’s movies!

A – Author you discovered
I actually did not read a new to me author this month. Oops! Next month 😊

S – Song you couldn’t get enough of

S – Surprise – Something that totally caught you off guard
Honestly, I really can’t recall anything that totally caught me off guard… 😂 Hmm. Umm well I guess the Shadow and Bone trailer caught me off guard! But in a good way. It looks amazing! Also, I recently learned that the content with the Crows is all prequel to the books. I am excited for that new material! I have a feeling that they did that because they want to set themselves up later for just the Crows… which would be totally amazing😁

Y – Your fave blog post of another blogger
Shadow and Bone Mood Boards by Cat @ThisIsOneForTheBooks. I thought that this was such a cool idea! Be sure to check out Cat’s blog. Cat has amazing content! 🥰

WWW ❓ Wednesday: 3/3/2021

Good afternoon, everyone😊
We are halfway through the week, already! How is your week so far? My week has been going pretty well so far. I am feeling pretty tired today. I have been working out every morning for a couple of hours before work so I think that is why I am feeling so tired. I decided to just do a shorter at home work out today rather than going to the gym. Better than doing nothing, I suppose!

WWW❓ Wednesday is a weekly meme hosted by Sam @TakingOnAWorldOfWords where we answer a series of 3 questions, all of which begin with the letter W:
What are you currently reading?
What did you recently finish reading?
What do you think you’ll read next?

Currently reading
The Stand by Stephen King (chapter 13😂 hoping to get to chapter 20 by the end of the week)
Torn (Wicked #2) by Jennifer L. Armentrout

Recently finished reading
A Court of Silver Flames by SJM
The Wicked King by Holly Black
The Queen of Nothing by Holly Black

Reading next
Brave (Wicked #3) by Jennifer L. Armentrout
Be sure to look out for my February Wrap Up + Tentative March TBR post coming this Thursday! I will talk more about what I am planning on reading this month in that post. 😊

🧐Flashback Friday: Oldie Paranormal Romance Books🔮

Happy Friday, everyone!
I am definitely ready for the weekend. 😂 How was your week? Overall, mine was pretty good. There were some hiccups but when I look at the grand scheme of things, everything went pretty well. The weather was much improved. We got up to 60 degrees F, but I was already whipping out my shorts at 50 😂 It felt like summer! I was so grateful for that warmth of the sun. Today, it is back to cloudy and a bit chilly (28 degrees F) but those moments of sunshine and “summer” warmth were amazing so it is worth it.

Flashback Friday is a weekly meme hosted here at HerBookishDesires that highlights oldie (but goodie) novels with the goal of bringing them back into the spotlight. It is my hope that, through this meme, we will discover – and rediscover – oldie but goodie novels together! Each week there is a new topic, which can be found at the information page here. Today’s topic is paranormal romance books. I also included plain paranormal in here because I just loved the series too much to omit it 😂 As always, I encourage you to get creative with the topics!

🔮Oldie Paranormal Romance Books🔮

🔮Paranormal:

The Body Finder (The Body Finder, #1)

Published: 2010

Violet Ambrose is grappling with two major issues: Jay Heaton and her morbid secret ability. While the sixteen-year-old is confused by her new feelings for her best friend since childhood, she is more disturbed by her “power” to sense dead bodies—or at least those that have been murdered. Since she was a little girl, she has felt the echoes that the dead leave behind in the world… and the imprints that attach to their killers.

Violet has never considered her strange talent to be a gift; it mostly just led her to find the dead birds her cat left for her. But now that a serial killer is terrorizing her small town, and the echoes of the local girls he’s claimed haunt her daily, she realizes she might be the only person who can stop him.

Despite his fierce protectiveness over her, Jay reluctantly agrees to help Violet on her quest to find the murderer—and Violet is unnerved by her hope that Jay’s intentions are much more than friendly. But even as she’s falling intensely in love, Violet is getting closer and closer to discovering a killer… and becoming his prey herself.

-I loved this series! If you like mystery with some paranormal/romance/fantasy action mixed in, you will love this series!! I highly recommend it.

❤️🔮Paranormal romance:

Evermore (The Immortals, #1)

Published : 2009

After a horrible accident claims the lives of her family, sixteen-year-old Ever Bloom can see people’s auras, hear their thoughts, and know someone’s entire life story by touching them. Going out of her way to avoid human contact to suppress her abilities, she has been branded a freak at her new high school—but everything changes when she meets Damen Auguste.

Damen is gorgeous, exotic and wealthy. He’s the only one who can silence the noise and random energy in her head—wielding a magic so intense, it’s as though he can peer straight into her soul. As Ever is drawn deeper into his enticing world of secrets and mystery, she’s left with more questions than answers. And she has no idea just who he really is—or what he is. The only thing she knows to be true is that she’s falling deeply and helplessly in love with him

-I read Evermore soooo many years ago. I would love to give the books a re-read one of these days. I also love the cover of Evermore! Tulips are my favorite flowers (as well as roses) so I always love seeing them on book covers.

Forbidden (Forbidden #1)

Published: 2012

When Claire Brennan begins to get psychic visions and mysterious warnings that she’s in danger at the start of her junior year, she isn’t sure what to think. But the truth is stranger than anything she could have imagined.

Alec MacKenzie has fled his duties as a Watcher angel and come to L.A. in search of normalcy. He never dreamed he would find a half-angel at his school, or that he would fall in love with her.

-I really enjoyed this book when I read it! I have been waiting for the sequel for literal years. They finally came out with the second book in 2018 (6 years later!!!) but I am not sure if I really want to read it because who knows how long it will take for the next book 😂 I don’t want to deal with the cliffhanger hangover for that long again!

What are some of your favorite paranormal/paranormal romance books? Let me know in the comments below!

📚The ReRead Book Tag📚

Happy Thursday, all! 😊
We are only one more sleep until Friday… yay! While this week was not terrible, I am always happy for it to be the weekend 😂 Today’s post is the Re-Read Book Tag. The Re-Read Book Tag was created by Brianna @Briann’sBooksandRandomness and I was tagged by the wonderful V @TheSassyLibrary Fox. Thank you, V, for nominating me to participate; I am so excited to do this tag!

Rules:

The ending gets me every time😭

I tried to read this twice and both times I was just not really in the mood for this type of book… I would really like to give it another chance, though!

I can’t think of one! 😬😬😬

I loved it when I read it in high school and that feels like ages ago and I would love to read it again

Jennifer Armentrout or Sarah J Maas!

I am going to change this to “series you want to read for an adaptation” because I really want to read Shadow and Bone since it is going to be a Netflix TV show (I think it premiers in April!). Since I just finished Six of Crows, I don’t think I would need to re-read it for the adaptation (the TV show has combined the plots of Shadow and Bone and Six of Crows).

I am sort of cheating with this because I once listened to the audiobook as a friend of mine was listening to it in the car as we were on a roadtrip. I am not a huge fan of audiobooks. It wasn’t a bad experience but I just prefer reading and holding the physical copy!

Thank you so much for the tag, V! I had a lot of fun! 😊

I nominate:

Hayden @FollowingGoodsBooks
Evelyn @EvelynReads
Leslie @BooksAreTheNewBlack
@AnyoneElseWhoWantsToDoTheTag!

As always, you do not have to participate in the tag, but I would definitely love to read your answers!😊
