🧐Flashback Friday: Oldie Greek Mythology Retellings💙

Happy Friday, everyone!
Flashback Friday is a weekly meme hosted here @HerBookishDesires that focuses on older novels with the hopes of bringing them back into the spotlight. For more information and upcoming topics, see the information page here. In addition, you can also find the upcoming topics in my weekly Sunday Post, which is a meme hosted by Kimberly @CaffeinatedReviewer!

Today’s topic is Greek mythology-or rather, retellings of Greek myths. I have always loved these types of books! I really should re-read the ones I have and pick up some new ones. What books of this kind would you recommend? New or old!

Here are my top choices of oldie but goodie modern takes on Greek mythology! I have included the links to Goodreads if you want to read their synopses. 🥰

While I still need to finish these series, I had to include it! Anyone else excited for the upcoming TV series?!

What are some of your favorite oldie books that retell Greek myths? Let me know in the comments below!

Happy May, everyone! Wow, it is May🌼. Finally. A particularly exciting something might be happening in May (could also be June/July😂) so I am really ready for May! I am also very ready for warmer weather. Thankfully, it has started warming up here. I am ready to read outside in the sunshine!

🌞The Sunday Post is a weekly meme hosted by Kimberly @CaffeinatedReviewer. According to Kimberly, “It’s a chance to share news~ A post to recap the past week on your blog and showcase books and things we have received. Share news about what is coming up on your blog for the week ahead.” See meme rules here.

🥰Weekly Recap
Overall, I had a great week. I have been going through some personal stuff for a while and, this week, something just clicked. Shifted. I felt a spark of hope again and I felt the urge to enjoy every moment of every day. To not look too far ahead and fall into the trap of “once I get through this, then…” or “once I have completed this, then…” To, essentially, not let any dark moment or situation overshadow the joy of life and living. To finally feel that shift was pretty liberating. However, that is not to say it is now all sunshine and daisies. 😂 But I feel better overall.

📚Books I Read This Week:
Darkfever by Karen Marie Moning
Bloodfever by Karen Marie Moning

📖Currently Reading:
Faefever by Karen Marie Moning (31% progress)

As you might recall, I set a spring TBR. Yeah, I am definitely not reading what I put on there. 😂 I started out… okay. I think I read maybe one book that was on there. 😂 I am honestly too afraid to check. Besides my general inability to stick to a TBR, I also want to blame Karen Marie Moning, specifically her Fever series, for my non-adherence to my TBR. I am really enjoying the world that she has built and I just feel like I have to keep reading. So, for right now, I am just going to be working my way through all 11 of her Fever books.

Happy Sunday, all!🌞☕️
I am currently sitting on my couch, surrounded by fluffy pups and drinking my morning coffee. 😌 This morning I am going to church with my dad and step-mom and we are going to eat at one of my favorite places – Tutto Fresco! My favorite dish there is the lemon ricotta pancakes🍋🥞😋. (Also pancakes are my favorite food) Besides the delicious pancakes, I love the atmosphere and the decor. There are hanging plants, trees and flowers near the tables, with Italian pottery and tiles. It’s just beautiful. For the rest of the day, I plan on just reading (books + posts around the blogosphere), working on upcoming posts, relaxing with my family❤️.

Today’s post is The Sunday Post, a weekly meme hosted by Kimberly @CaffeinatedReviewer. Per Kimberly, “It’s a chance to share news~ A post to recap the past week on your blog and showcase books and things we have received. Share news about what is coming up on your blog for the week ahead.”

🔖Currently reading:
The Prophecy (Titan series #4) by JLA
Ender’s Game by Orson Scott Card

✔️Recently Finished:
The Return (Titan series #1) by JLA
The Power (Titan series #2) by JLA
The Struggle (Titan series #3) by JLA

📚Total Books Read in 2022: 12
-3 in March (so far)
-9 in February

📋Goal: 50 books before August
-Status: BEHIND😫 This is goal is a bit of a stretch. (I don’t know if I will be able to read 10 books a month here on out with everything going on so I am behind!!) I will likely need to change the goal to 50 books for the year, but I will be doing my best to read 50 books by August!

Overall, I am pretty happy with my reading progress, especially considering that I just started reading in 2022 starting in February. I am trying to read as much as possible before starting medical school as I am not sure how much I will be able to read. I would be happier if I had read a little bit more in March. I know the month is not yet over, but the chances of me reading 6 more books in the next 12 days is pretty slim😂. We will see though! While it is good to have goals, I am not going to stress out about whether or not I will make my goal exactly. I am just glad I have the time to read.😊

Why I’ve Been Absent!/I am BACK!🎉

Hello, hello!

First of all, happy St. Patrick’s Day!☘️ Also, happy Thursday! Tomorrow is Friday, yay!

Wow, it has been several months since I last posted, blog hopped, or done anything blog related. The past several months have been extremely busy and full of change, stress, and joy and have left little room for activities such as blogging! Here is what I’ve been up to:

-Medical scribing: 👩🏽‍💻 Medical scribes document patient information into the Electronic Health Record so practitioners (physicians, NPs, PAs) can spend more time with the patient and less typing things out during the patient visit. For more information about medical scribing click here. Also feel free to ask me any questions about my experience or about scribing in general!

-Abercrombie and Fitch associate🛍

Applying to medical school: 🩺 This involves filling out two applications (primary and secondary) for pretty much every school applied to and interviewing! I am extremely blessed to say that I have been accepted into some schools! It is crazy because, the last post I made, I had just submitted my primary applications! When I read that, I felt that I had come full circle and the sense of “it all paid off” really hit me. Feeling so blessed!!

Reading📚: I have recently gotten back into reading after quite a long break. It has been so nice to get back into reading.
Currently reading: The Struggle (Titan series #3) by Jennifer L. Armentrout

Spending time with family👨‍👩‍👧‍👧

My Plan for Blogging During Medical School

I have this … habit of disappearing (okay, it has only been twice but still) and I really do not like it as I really love to blog, interact with you all, etc. However, medical school is extremely hard and extremely busy. So this begs the question: Now that I am picking my blog back up, won’t I just do my little disappearing act again once medical school starts in the summer?

My answer is: I am going to really make an effort to keep this blog up. I have heard that it is important to have a hobby or two throughout medical school so this will be one (in addition to having a small herb garden🪴). I will likely post 1-2 times per week during medical school, but there may be a week every once in a while when I do not post at all! I am thinking of rotating through my usual schedule of Monday Music Match Up, Top Ten Tuesday, Flashback Friday… with a couple of book reviews every now and then (not sure how often I will get to read/finish a book).

Upcoming posts to watch out for:

📖+🎵Monday Music Match Up: Haven Trilogy🦋

Good morning, everyone! Happy Monday!
How are you all today? It is a very rainy and cloudy day. Yesterday was cloudy as well! I don’t mind when it is cloudy but I also start to feel glum when it is always cloudy. However, I am going to try and make the best of the stormy whether and the fact that I am at home, off work today.

Today’s post is Monday Music Match Up. I have not done this post for a couple of weeks and I have to say, I have missed it. For those of you who don’t know or are new to my page, Monday Music Match Up is a weekly feature here at HerBookishDesires that shares the music that I have listened to, or matched, with certain books or series. This week’s topic is the 🦋Haven🦋 trilogy. by Kristi Cook.

Haven (Winterhaven, #1)

Genre: Paranormal Romance
Author: Kristi Cook
Published: 2011

Synopsis as from Goodreads:

Violet McKenna thought she was crazy when she had a vivid vision of her dad’s murder—but when her premonition came true, her life fell apart. Then she found a new school: Winterhaven. There, Violet fits right in. All the students have special “gifts” like her own, and she quickly finds a close group of friends. But Violet’s attraction to an alluring boy becomes problematic when intense visions of his death start to haunt her. In her premonitions, the secret he is unwilling to share begins to reveal itself—and the unbelievable becomes reality. To Violet’s horror, she learns that their destinies are intertwined in a critical—and deadly—way.

While reading this trilogy, I listened to “Prelude” by Jesse Cook. I chose this song because it has a nice, mysterious vibe to it similar to that of the books, but it also has a faster tempo towards the end, oftentimes mirroring the crescendos of the book itself if that makes sense! Please, feel free to give the music a listen while you read the synopsis!

Unfortunately, there is no fan art for these books! I really wish there was. They are wonderful books! I have read them multiple times because I love them so much. I was first introduced to Haven when I was reading books from my local city library rather than buying them at the bookstore. (I have always preferred the ambience of a library compared to that of a bookstore but I also love owning books 😂) A year or two or three later, I randomly thought about the book and I really wanted to have a copy of my own so I got a copy at Barnes and Noble. I actually still remember that day even though it was probably 8-9 years ago!

Have you read Haven? Is it something that you would read? What did you think of the music? Let me know in the comments below!

🧐Flashback Friday: Oldie books with new beginnings

Good afternoon, bookworms!

Happy Friday! I hope you are all having a lovely week. Are you ready for the weekend?! Tomorrow is my dad’s birthday🥳 I am excited to celebrate with him. I can’t put much of any details in here about what we are doing because he is subscribed. 😂 But it is going to be a great day and I am really happy that he is here so we can celebrate in person together. I even got to take the day off, which is nice! I have not had a Saturday off in weeks so I am going to really enjoy it😊

Flashback Friday is a weekly meme hosted here @HerBookishDesires that seeks to highlight oldie but goodie novels with the goal of brining them back into the spotlight. It is my hope that, through this meme, we can discover – and rediscover – oldie but goodie novels together. Each week, there is a new topic which can be found here.

This week’s topic is Oldie Books with New Beginnings.

Obsidian (Lux, #1)

Synopsis:

Starting over sucks.

When we moved to West Virginia right before my senior year, I’d pretty much resigned myself to thick accents, dodgy internet access, and a whole lot of boring… until I spotted my hot neighbor, with his looming height and eerie green eyes. Things were looking up.

And then he opened his mouth.

Daemon is infuriating. Arrogant. Stab-worthy. We do not get along. At all. But when a stranger attacks me and Daemon literally freezes time with a wave of his hand, well, something… unexpected happens.

The hot alien living next door marks me.

You heard me. Alien. Turns out Daemon and his sister have a galaxy of enemies wanting to steal their abilities, and Daemon’s touch has me lit up like the Vegas Strip. The only way I’m getting out of this alive is by sticking close to Daemon until my alien mojo fades.

If I don’t kill him first, that is.

Moonglass

Synopsis:

I read once that water is a symbol for emotions. And for a while now, I’ve thought maybe my mother drowned in both.

Anna’s life is upended when her father accepts a job transfer the summer before her junior year. It’s bad enough that she has to leave her friends and her life behind, but her dad is moving them to the beach where her parents first met and fell in love–a place awash in memories that Anna would just as soon leave under the surface.

While life on the beach is pretty great, with ocean views and one adorable lifeguard in particular, there are also family secrets that were buried along the shore years ago. And the ebb and flow of the ocean’s tide means that nothing–not the sea glass that she collects on the sand and not the truths behind Anna’s mother’s death–stays buried forever.

Dangerous Lies

A teen is forced to make a fresh start after witnessing a violent crime—but love and danger find her anyway in this novel from Becca Fitzpatrick, the New York Times bestselling author of the Hush, Hush saga.

Stella Gordon is not her real name. Thunder Basin, Nebraska, is not her real home. This is not her real life.

After witnessing a lethal crime, Stella Gordon is sent to the middle of nowhere for her own safety before she testifies against the man she saw kill her mother’s drug dealer.

But Stella was about to start her senior year with the boyfriend she loves. How can she be pulled away from the only life she knows and expected to start a new one in Nebraska? Stella chafes at her protection and is rude to everyone she meets. She’s not planning on staying long, so why be friendly? Then she meets Chet Falconer and it becomes harder to keep her guard up, even as her guilt about having to lie to him grows.

As Stella starts to feel safer, the real threat to her life increases—because her enemies are actually closer than she thinks…

Haven (Winterhaven, #1)

Synopsis:

Violet McKenna thought she was crazy when she had a vivid vision of her dad’s murder—but when her premonition came true, her life fell apart. Then she found a new school: Winterhaven. There, Violet fits right in. All the students have special “gifts” like her own, and she quickly finds a close group of friends. But Violet’s attraction to an alluring boy becomes problematic when intense visions of his death start to haunt her. In her premonitions, the secret he is unwilling to share begins to reveal itself—and the unbelievable becomes reality. To Violet’s horror, she learns that their destinies are intertwined in a critical—and deadly—way

🌞The Sunday Post: 2/14/2021 🥰🌹❤️

Happy Valentine’s Day, everyone! 🥰🌹❤️
I hope you are all having a lovely weekend so far and a great start to Valentine’s Day! My sister got me flowers and my favorite Ghirardelli dark chocolate caramel squares. I have the best sister ever. My plans for today are not super glamorous 😂 but I really don’t mind. It is too cold to do anything anyway and we are expecting a snow storm so best to stay in this evening. The plan is to work out with my bestie this morning, read (finish) A Court of Frost and Starlight, and watch some movies/TV shows. In terms of TV shows, I think I am going to watch the Valentine’s Day episode for H2O (yes, I still like that show 😂) and watch some Bridgerton. I am not quite sure what movie I will watch. Maybe Pride and Prejudice or Romeo and Juliet. I also have to do some work before I work tomorrow and some meal prep so that is also on the docket for today. What plans do you have for today?

🌞The Sunday Post: 01/17/2021

Greetings my lovely friends!
I hope you are all doing well. It is lightly snowing here today❄️ so I think my day is going to most be spent with hot tea, a book and a blanket after I get finished with the rest of my weekend chores! I may have neglected them yesterday… 😬

The Sunday Post is a weekly meme hosted by Kimberly @CaffeinatedReviewer where we discuss bloggish news, recap what has gone on with the blog and highlight any upcoming blog stuff. (So eloquently written, I know 😂) See here for the info page.

Books I Finished:
🧙🏻‍♀️😈Kingdom of the Wicked by Kerri Maniscalco (Ya Fantasy)
🌌🌙A Strange Hymn by Laura Thalassa (New Adult, Romance, Fantasy – The Bargainer series #2)
🌌🌙Dark Harmony by Laura Thalassa (New Adult, Romance, Fantasy – The Bargainer series #3)

So I may have totally binged read The Bargainer trilogy 😂 But damn, it was really good! I am surprised that this series does not have as much hype around it. If you are a fan of SJM’s ACOTAR or JLA’s FBAA, then you will definitely like The Bargainer trilogy.

Currently Reading:
Crooked Kingdom by Leigh Bardugo
I know… I am moving somewhat slow through this book but that is because I was totally distracted with The Bargainer series. I will finish CK this week! 😂

Yearly Reading Goal Update: 7/100
In my Jan 2021 Goals post, I gave a range of 60-100 but then in my TTT post I said 100 books😂 So I am going to just go for it and set the goal at 100.

“Shoot for the moon and even if you miss, you’ll land amongst the stars…”

Les Brown

January Reading Update: 7/10

What’s Left on my Jan TBR:
The Stand by Stephen King (1440 pages)
Vampire Academy by Richelle Mead
~Given that The Stand is soooo long, I might just start that at the beginning of February. I really want to make my goal of reading 10 books and I feel like I will just put off reading The Stand if I also start reading a second book at the same time. We will see! I will update you all on Wednesday. 😊

🧐Flashback Friday: Oldie but Goodie Authors – Then and Now

Happy Friday, everyone!
I hope you are all doing well. This week has been a pretty long week for me and I definitely ready for today to be over and it to be officially the weekend. 😴

Flashback Friday is a weekly meme hosted here @HerBookishDesires that focuses on older novels with the goal of bringing them back into the spotlight. It is my hope that, through this weekly meme, we can discover and rediscover older books together! 😊 If you have any suggestions for future topics, please feel free to let me know in the comments! I would love to hear your suggestions!! Feel free to participate in this post! It would make my day, truly!

This week’s topic is Oldie but Goodie Authors – Then and Now. This idea was suggested to me by my friend, Olivia! Basically, we were thinking of something where the post includes an oldie book and a newer book from the same author that is an “oldie but goodie” author for you! I apologize if the title isn’t the best at indicating that. I am not the best with titling! 😂 A huge thank you to Olivia for suggesting this week’s topic!

Oldie but Goodie Authors – Then and Now

Oldie but Goodie Author: Jennifer L. Armentrout

I know FBAA is considered New Adult while Lux is YA, but I haven’t read any of Jen’s other books (YET!!). I really want to read her other novels and am really hoping to read them this year!

Oldie but Good Author: Jennifer Lynn Barnes

I still need to finish The Naturals series but I remember really liking it when I read it. It really reminds of the TV show, “Criminal Minds” – but in book format! I have The Inheritance Games on my TBR!

Oldie but Good Author: Melissa Marr

I was going to include Wicked Lovely instead of Made for You but I feel as though Made for You is less well known as Wicked Lovely so I included it instead. 😊 I have no yet read The Wicked and the Dead and I didn’t even know it was a new book until I was searching through my oldie but goodie authors 😂 I will have to add it to my TBR.

Oldie but Goodie Author: Veronica Roth

I loved the Divergent series even though the end destroyed me. 😂 Since Divergent, I have not read anything from Veronica Roth. The Chosen Ones is an adult fantasy novel that was published in 2020. She does have another YA series called Carve the Mark but I just figured I would go with her most recent publication.

That is all I have selected for today’s Flashback Friday post! I hope you all enjoyed this post. 🥰

I hope you all have a great Friday and weekend. Catch up with you guys soon!

-Maya🌹
